Latte PDF vs Preview on the Mac

Preview comes with macOS at no extra cost and handles most everyday PDF jobs: reading, marking up, filling in and signing forms, combining files, moving pages and password-protecting a copy. What it can't do is change the words already in a PDF; Apple's own guide says so. Latte PDF adds that: it edits existing text and scanned text in place and exports to Word, on your computer, for a one-time price from $9.99. If you only read, sign and fill PDFs, Preview is enough.

What Preview does well

Preview is already installed, it is quick, and for many people it is all they need. Apple's guide shows how to:

  • Fill out PDF forms by clicking a field and typing.
  • Sign with the trackpad, the built-in camera, or an iPhone or iPad.
  • Add text boxes, notes and other markup on top of a page.
  • Combine PDFs, and add, delete or move pages.
  • Password-protect a PDF and reduce its size.
  • Select and copy text in a photo with Live Text.

What Preview can't do

What Preview and Latte PDF do with the text in a PDFPreviewLatte PDF
Change the words already on the pageNo: "you can't edit the text of a PDF in Preview" (Apple)Yes, in their own font, size and place
Change the words in a scanLive Text copies text in a photo; editing it isn't describedYes: read on your computer, then retyped to match the scan
Export to WordNot described in Apple's guideExport to Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Find what changed between two versionsNot described in Apple's guideCompare highlights every change

A text box in Preview sits on top of the page, so the old words are still there underneath, and still in the file. Latte PDF replaces the words themselves.

When Preview is enough

  • You read PDFs, fill in forms that have boxes to type in, and sign them.
  • You put pages in order, merge a few files or make a file smaller.
  • Adding a note or a text box on top of the page is all the change you need.

When to add Latte PDF

  • A date, a name, a price or a typo in the PDF itself needs changing, and there is no Word file to go back to.
  • The PDF is a scan and the words in it need correcting.
  • You need the PDF as a Word document, made on your computer.
  • You need to see exactly what changed between two versions of a contract.

Latte PDF doesn't replace Preview: keep Preview for reading and signing, and open a file in Latte PDF when the words need to change. A licence is a one-time $9.99 for one computer.

Questions

Can Preview edit the text in a PDF?

No. Apple's Preview guide says you can't edit the text of a PDF in Preview; you can add text boxes and notes on top of the page instead.

Will a file edited in Latte PDF still open in Preview?

Yes. Save As writes an ordinary PDF that opens in Preview and every other PDF app. Your original file is never changed.

Is Latte PDF free like Preview?

Latte PDF will be free to try with no time limit: you can open, edit and preview everything. A one-time licence, from $9.99, unlocks saving.
