How to edit a PDF without uploading it
To edit a PDF without uploading it, use an app that does the work on your computer instead of a website. Online editors start with an upload: the file goes to the company's servers, and their own pages say how long they keep it, such as an hour or a day. An offline editor such as Latte PDF opens, edits and saves the PDF on your computer. Editing never sends the file anywhere, and it works with the internet switched off.
Updated October 2026. The steps match the current Latte PDF for Mac.
Edit offline, step by step
Open the PDF in Latte PDF
Drop it on the window or choose File › Open… (⌘O). The file is read from your disk, once.
Switch off the internet if you like
Turn off Wi-Fi to see for yourself: opening, editing, reading scans and saving all keep working.
Make your changes
Choose Edit › Edit Text (⌘E), click a line and type. Fill Form, Add Signature… and Black Out work the same way, on the computer.
Save a new copy to a local folder
Choose File › Save As… (⇧⌘S). Pick a folder on this computer if the file shouldn't go anywhere: a folder that syncs to a cloud service uploads whatever is saved in it.
Saving needs a licence; Activate it once, with the internet on, and saving works offline from then on.
How to tell whether a tool uploads your file
- It runs in a browser tab. A website can't edit a file it hasn't received: the PDF is uploaded first.
- It says "Upload" or "Drop file here". That is the file leaving your computer.
- It promises to delete the file later. "Deleted after one hour" means the file was stored on its servers until then.
- It asks you to sign in to download. The edited copy is kept in your account on its servers.
- It stops working offline. Turn off Wi-Fi: if editing stops, the work happens somewhere else.
What Latte PDF does go online for
Only the buttons you click: Activate and Deactivate this computer, for your licence; Check for updates; and the buttons in Help › Invite Friends. Nothing runs in the background or at launch, and the app sends no usage data.
Other ways a file can leave your computer
- Cloud folders. Saving into a folder that syncs uploads the file to that service. Keep private copies in a local folder.
- Email and chat. Attaching the edited PDF sends it, of course; send only the copy you mean to share.
- AI assistants. An AI feature that reads or summarises a document usually sends it to the company's servers. Latte PDF has none.
Questions
Is it safe to use an online PDF editor?
It depends on the document. For a menu or a flyer, an upload may not matter. For contracts, IDs, medical, tax or bank papers, editing on your own computer means there is no copy on anyone else's servers, for any length of time.
Does Latte PDF send anything about my files?
No. Editing never sends a PDF, a page or a line of text from one, and the app sends no usage data, crash reports or statistics.
