How to convert a PDF to Word offline
To convert a PDF to Word without uploading it, use an app that makes the Word file on your computer. In Latte PDF, open the PDF, choose File › Export to Word… (⌥⌘W) and pick a name: it writes a .docx document you can edit in Word or any app that opens Word files. Scanned pages are read on your computer first, and the original PDF isn't changed.
Updated October 2026. The steps match the current Latte PDF for Mac.
Convert to Word, step by step
Open the PDF
Drop it on the Latte PDF window or choose File › Open… (⌘O).
Make any edits first
The Word file is made from the PDF as Save As would write it, so text you changed, pages you moved and details you blacked out come across that way.
Choose Export to Word
Choose File › Export to Word… (⌥⌘W). If you marked details to black out, you review them first.
Name the document
Pick a name and a folder. Every page is read, scanned ones with the text recognition built into macOS; a long file shows its progress, with Cancel.
Open it in Word
The .docx is a new file next to the others; the original PDF is never changed.
Exporting needs a licence. Trying Latte PDF, editing and previewing are free.
Excel, PowerPoint or plain text instead
- File › Export to Excel… saves the PDF's tables and text as a workbook, a sheet for each page.
- File › Export to PowerPoint… makes a presentation, a slide for each page with its text editable.
- File › Export Text… writes what every page says to a plain text file.
Online converters
Most PDF to Word converters are websites: you upload the PDF, the conversion runs on their servers, and their pages say the file is deleted after a while, such as an hour. That is fine for a public document. For a contract, a CV with your address or anything with account numbers, converting on your computer keeps the only copies with you.
Questions
Do I need Microsoft Word installed?
Not to convert. Latte PDF writes the .docx file itself; you need Word, or another app that opens Word documents, only to open it.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned pages are read on your computer with the text recognition built into macOS, and their words come across as text you can edit.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. The Word file is made on your computer. The app goes online only when you click a button for it, such as Activate or Check for updates.
